Activities With an Aussie
Aussies
are easy to train. Because of their versatility, quick understanding,
high intelligence and will to work they are able to fulfill a lot
of tasks. In Europe, their are only a few Aussies herding sheep
- their original task. But this extremely versatile dog can excell
in different areas.
Obedience
is a very good basis for ongoing training. You are building
a bridge of confidence between the dog and his human companion.
Thus, you can give him more freedom, knowing you can rely on him.
If you enjoy basic obedience class, you can go on and take further
exams.
You
can also train Agility with your Aussie. Dog and handler
have to work out a trail with different obstacles (hurdles, tunnel,
see-saw, table, catwalk) within a given period of time. Because
of their mobility and quickness, Aussies are very qualified for
this kind of sport. Dog and handler have fun.
Flyball
is another sport you can do with your Aussie. The dog has to jump
over several hurdles, activate a machine that ejects a ball, catch
the ball and bring it back to the handler.
Herding
is the original task of Australian Shepherds. Endurance, mobility,
independence and intelligence make the Aussie exceed with this.
You can also work on Tracking with your Aussie. The dog learns
to work out a persons track over a given distance with curves and
other difficulties.
If
you have lots of time and seek for a very satisfying activity with
your Aussie, you can start Search and Rescue Training. This
teaches the dog to find missed persons within rubble, large areas
and avalanches.
Aussies
can also be trained within all areas of Partner Dogs.
As
you see, there are lots of possible activities you can do with your
Aussie. Usually, it's not the Aussie who reaches the limits, it's
the human companion.
